Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 16 (NationPress) In a decisive move, the West Bengal government reallocated several officers from the West Bengal Police and Kolkata Police who had been transferred earlier by the Election Commission of India (ECI). This rapid reassignment occurred on Monday.
The ECI had previously removed individuals from key positions, including the Director General of Police (DGP), Kolkata Police Commissioner, DGP (Law and Order), and DGP (Prisons). Within hours of their removal, the state government swiftly appointed these officers to new roles.
Piyush Pandey has been designated as the Director of Security, having previously served as the Director General of Police.
Meanwhile, Manoj Verma, the former Director of Security, has now taken on the role of Additional Director General (ADG) of Security.
Supratim Sarkar, who was the Kolkata Police Commissioner, has also been replaced. Ajay Kumar Nand will now serve as the new Commissioner of Police in Kolkata.
Post-removal, Supratim Sarkar has been assigned as Additional Director General (CID) and has also been tasked with the additional responsibilities of ADG (Intelligence Branch) for Kolkata.
Changes were also made to the positions of DGP (Law and Order) and DGP (Prisons).
Vineet Goyal, the previous DGP (Law and Order), has been appointed as the Director General of the State Intelligence Branch.
Ajay Mukund Ranade has been named as the Additional Director General (Law and Order).
Natarajan Ramesh Babu has been appointed to the position of Director General (Prisons).
Lakshmi Narayan Meena, who formerly served as ADG (CID), is now responsible for the role of ADG (Prisons).
Earlier on the same day, the Election Commission announced that those officers who were removed would not be assigned any duties related to the election process until the elections were concluded.
Consequently, the state government reassigned them to different positions later in the afternoon.
On Sunday, the Election Commission unveiled the election timetable for four states, including West Bengal, as well as one Union Territory.
While other states will conduct voting in a single phase, the Assembly elections in West Bengal are scheduled to occur in two phases on April 23 and April 29.
With the announcement of the election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct has come into effect statewide.
During this timeframe, the Election Commission wields special authority over the administrative framework.
