Kolkata, March 16 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has made significant changes in the police leadership of West Bengal on Monday. This includes the replacement of the acting Director General of Police (DGP), Peeyush Pandey, and the Kolkata Police Commissioner, Supratim Sarkar.

According to the Commission’s directive, Siddh Nath Gupta, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 1992 batch, will take over as the new DGP, succeeding Pandey.

Furthermore, Ajay Kumar Nand, who belongs to the 1996 batch of IPS, has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Kolkata Police, replacing Sarkar.

Both Pandey and Sarkar were initially assigned their positions on January 30.

Additionally, Vineet Kumar Goyal, who served as the Director General of Law & Order, has also been removed and will be succeeded by Ajay Mukud Ranade, an IPS officer from the 1995 batch, now serving as the Additional Director General of Law & Order.

Goyal, a former Kolkata Police Commissioner, faced removal following controversies linked to the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata in August 2024.

In the same announcement, Natarajan Ramesh Babu, from the 1991 IPS batch, has been appointed as the Director General of Correctional Services.

During a press conference on Sunday, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar assured that the upcoming elections in West Bengal would be conducted peacefully and without violence. To support this objective, the ECI has issued these transfer orders.

On the same night, the ECI also ordered the transfer of Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty and Home Secretary Jagdish Prasad Meena, stating they would not partake in any election-related responsibilities.

Dushyant Nariala has replaced Chakraborty, and Shanghamitra Ghosh has taken over Meena's position.

The elections in West Bengal are set for two phases on April 23 and April 29, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4.
