New Delhi, Oct 14 (NationPress) Union Minister Pralhad Joshi is scheduled to lead the World Standards Day (WSD) event on Tuesday. This significant event, organized by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the national standards authority under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, honors the critical frameworks and the individuals behind them — including experts, scientists, engineers, policymakers, and innovators — who contribute to quality, safety, and sustainability.
The festivities will take place at the National Institute of Training for Standardization (NITS).
During the event, the National Lighting Code of India 2025 will be unveiled, alongside the launch of the Learning Management System (LMS) and the Online Standards Development (OSD) Module of the BIS Standards Portal, as mentioned by the ministry.
This year’s theme, “A Shared Vision for a Better World: Standards for Sustainable Development Goals,” highlights the essential role of international standards in fostering cooperation and advancement.
These standards act as catalysts for alignment among governments, industries, academia, and civil society in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The BIS will celebrate World Standards Day at various locations nationwide.
The inaugural celebration took place in 1970 to enhance global awareness about the significance of standards in ensuring safety, quality, and international trade.
This day was established by the ISO, along with organizations like the IEC and ITU, to emphasize the collaborative efforts of experts in formulating global standards, stated the ministry.
The BIS collaborates closely with ministries and industry associations through standardization cells, aiming to identify gaps and engage in the creation of national standards. Furthermore, BIS conducts search and seizure operations to ensure compliance with its certified standards. Recently, it carried out raids on several e-commerce companies, confiscating products that fell short of these standards.
