Chandigarh, March 8 (NationPress) In a significant intelligence operation, the Punjab Police have dismantled an arms supply ring by apprehending two individuals, including a minor, and seized five homemade 7.65 mm pistols from them, as stated by State Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav on Sunday.
The apprehended suspects have been recognized as Ajay Kumar from Mehrajwala village in Jalandhar and a 17-year-old accomplice.
DGP Yadav revealed that initial investigations indicate the suspects were following orders from foreign handlers located in the Philippines and the UAE.
Moreover, the DGP disclosed that the accused had acquired illegal firearms from Madhya Pradesh, aiming to supply them to criminal organizations.
The confiscated weapons were intended for use in violent crimes and extortion within the region, he added.
Sharing details of the operation, Senior Superintendent of Police (Kapurthala) Gaurav Toora noted that based on credible information, police teams detained Ajay Kumar and seized one pistol from him.
Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of his 17-year-old partner and the recovery of four additional pistols from him, he mentioned.
The SSP stated that the suspects purchased the firearms from an unidentified individual in Madhya Pradesh for a total of Rs 87,000.
Ongoing investigations aim to uncover both the sources and distribution channels involved in this case, he added.
Earlier, on Saturday, the Punjab Police detained wanted gangster Amritpal Singh, also known as Amrit Dalam, at the Moldova border.
This detention was executed based on an Interpol Red Notice, issued at the request of the Punjab Police in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Interpol, and other central agencies.
The police have established an Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC), overseen by Inspector General of Police (Counter Intelligence) Ashish Choudhary, to engage with criminals abroad and expedite their extradition back to Punjab for legal proceedings.
