Hardeep Singh Puri Dismisses Lockdown Rumors: No Proposal Under Review
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 27 (NationPress) Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday emphasized that the circulating rumors regarding a nationwide lockdown are completely unfounded, asserting that no such proposal is under discussion by the government. This statement aims to alleviate public anxiety and provide precise information concerning any potential restrictions.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, Puri mentioned, “The global landscape is continually evolving, and we are diligently observing developments across energy, supply chains, and essential goods in real-time. Under the guidance of our esteemed Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji, we are taking all necessary measures to ensure the uninterrupted supply of fuel, energy, and other critical resources for our citizens. We are entirely prepared to confront emerging challenges.”
“India has consistently shown resilience in the face of global uncertainties, and we will continue to respond in a timely, proactive, and coordinated fashion,” he added.
He reiterated that the rumors about a lockdown in India are entirely false.
“Let me make it clear, rumors of a lockdown in India are absolutely untrue. The Government of India is not considering any such proposal. In these times, it is crucial that we remain calm, responsible, and united. Spreading rumors and inciting panic in such situations is irresponsible and damaging,” he stated.
Puri’s comments arise amidst global oil and gas shortages, which have sparked speculation regarding a possible lockdown in India, with concerns also surfacing about the supply situation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), described as ‘worrisome’.
Earlier this week, the Indian government firmly dismissed any speculation about a nationwide lockdown, clarifying that there are no plans to impose restrictions on public movement or economic activities. Officials revealed that recent statements made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been widely misinterpreted.
The confusion followed the Prime Minister’s references to “preparedness” during recent parliamentary discussions, which were made in light of ongoing tensions in West Asia and their potential economic ramifications.
The spike in rumors also coincided with the sixth anniversary of the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, intensifying online concerns. However, the government stressed that the call for “COVID-like preparedness” pertains solely to administrative readiness and contingency planning, and not as a signal for stay-at-home orders or mobility restrictions.
