Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 6 (NationPress) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated on Friday that the emerging challenges of instability stemming from geopolitical rivalries across land, sea, and air, exemplified by the ongoing tensions in the Gulf involving the US, Israel, and Iran, are increasingly becoming the standard state of affairs.
During his address at the Sagar Sankalp Seminar in Kolkata, the Defence Minister elaborated on the implications of the crisis, underscoring the strategic significance of the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf in relation to global energy security.
“Any disruption in this region has a direct impact on oil and gas supplies worldwide, leading to uncertainties that could significantly affect global trade and economies. The escalating geopolitical competition across land, sea, air, and even space is undoubtedly concerning. What is particularly alarming is that these risks of instability are increasingly becoming the norm,” Singh remarked.
He noted that the current events unfolding in West Asia are highly unusual, making it challenging to predict the ultimate outcome of the ongoing crisis.
Despite the uncertainties arising from the geopolitical landscape, he expressed confidence that India would take a leadership role in the maritime domain. “Self-reliance is crucial for overcoming supply chain disruptions,” the Defence Minister emphasized.
Singh asserted that in today’s global geopolitics, the oceans have regained prominence in the world’s power dynamics, and as a significant maritime nation, India must step forward with confidence, capability, and a defined vision.
“Our defence sector is leveraging advanced and precise technologies. Therefore, our government firmly believes that in this era of unpredictability, self-reliance is vital to mitigate supply chain issues. A major component of our self-reliance vision is our defence public sector undertakings,” he added.
He also conveyed that the Indian government aims to position India among the top ten global players in the shipbuilding industry.
