RG Kar Incident: Autopsy Procedure's Confidentiality Breached, Reports CFSL

Kolkata, Dec 27 (NationPress) A recent report from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) regarding the horrific rape and murder of a junior doctor at the state-operated R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata last August has emerged this week, highlighting that the confidentiality of the post-mortem examination of the victim's body was fundamentally compromised and that standard protocols were overlooked during the procedure.
“Upon reviewing the videography of the post-mortem examination, it was noted that numerous individuals were present in the autopsy room, with some taking photographs and videos on their personal devices, which contravenes the established protocols for maintaining case confidentiality and respecting the dignity of the deceased,” the seventh point in the CFSL report stated.
The CFSL report emphasized that the injury report of the victim was primarily drafted for the declaration of death (i.e., brought dead) as it lacked detailed examination findings regarding the injuries.
“After the Injury Certificate was prepared, the body was sent for a post-mortem examination. Examination of the Magistrate inquest report indicates that most findings aligned with the post-mortem report,” the CFSL report noted.
The CFSL has proposed additional investigations to ascertain whether the crimes of rape and murder were committed by a single perpetrator or if there were accomplices involved.
According to the report, while the possibility of a sole perpetrator cannot be dismissed, further investigations based on various past scientific reports by experts in related cases could provide clarity on whether multiple individuals participated in the crime.
So far, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed only one charge sheet in the case, identifying civic volunteer Sanjay Roy as the “sole prime accused” in the rape and murder.
On the morning of August 9 of this year, the victim's body was discovered in the seminar hall of the R.G. Kar hospital premises. Initially, the Kolkata Police and later the CBI conducted the investigation, treating the seminar hall as the “crime scene.”
However, the CFSL report, submitted to the CBI, clearly stated that there were no apparent signs of a struggle within the seminar room.
Simultaneously, the CFSL report indicated that the majority of the wounds found on the victim’s body were the result of her attempts to fend off the assault.
