Excitement in Samba as New Bridge Over Basantar River Opens
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Samba, March 15 (NationPress) The newly completed third bridge over the Basantar River in the Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir has officially opened its gates for vehicular traffic.
For years, the residents had been advocating for this vital infrastructure due to frequent road accidents at SIDCO Chowk and the persistent traffic congestion.
The launch of this bridge is expected to bring about significant enhancements in traffic management.
Community members express that this bridge will not only minimize accidents but also offer substantial relief to daily travelers.
In the past, traffic snarls lasting several hours were a regular sight at SIDCO Chowk and nearby areas, negatively impacting both the public and local businesses. With the bridge now operational, a notable decrease in traffic congestion is anticipated, facilitating a smoother flow of vehicles.
Officials report that several critical projects have been finalized along National Highway-44, focusing on safety enhancements and improved passenger services. An investment of approximately Rs 171.25 crore has been allocated for these initiatives.
These developments include addressing 'black spots'—areas prone to accidents—between SIDCO Chowk and Gole Mela-Sangur, constructing a Lower Vehicular Underpass (LVUP) adjacent to the service road in Samba, and creating modern roadside facilities at Jhajjar Kotli, Qazigund, and Marhama.
The local populace is elated about this project's completion and has conveyed their appreciation to the government and the involved agencies.
In an interview with IANS, a local resident shared that the establishment of the third bridge has provided significant relief to the citizens of Samba.
“This area had recently turned into a hotspot for accidents, with SIDCO Chowk recognized as one of two major 'blackspots',” he explained, emphasizing that the National Highway Authority responded seriously to the issue and took necessary action.
Vikas Dongra, another Samba resident, also expressed his joy regarding the bridge's construction, highlighting the longstanding need for such infrastructure in the region.
He detailed that traffic jams were once a daily hassle, causing considerable trouble for commuters.
“Moreover, road accidents were occurring nearly every day. Now that the bridge is functional, these concerns should diminish, allowing the public to enjoy safer and more efficient travel,” he stated.
