Guwahati, Feb 13 (NationPress) The Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has given the green light for the transformation of a level crossing gate situated between Malahar Halt and Samsi stations in the Katihar Division into a modern Road Over Bridge (ROB), as per officials' reports.
This approval signifies a major step forward in infrastructure enhancement under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), according to Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, who addressed the media on Thursday.
The minister's clearance facilitates the prompt initiation of the project, which is projected to cost Rs 177 crore, funded entirely by the Railways.
CPRO Sharma highlighted that this crucial initiative reaffirms the Railways' dedication to bolstering infrastructure, elevating public convenience, and enhancing overall connectivity in the area.
The level crossing is situated in a densely trafficked zone with substantial vehicle flow.
According to the July 2024 traffic census, the Traffic Vehicle Units (TVU) at this crossing reached 4,21,001, underscoring the pressing necessity for grade separation to enhance traffic administration and safety.
In response to local needs and existing traffic trends, the project entails constructing a Road Over Bridge at the current level crossing for local traffic, along with an additional ROB at a diversion point to effectively manage city and through traffic, ensuring fluid movement.
Upon completion, the initiative is anticipated to significantly improve both road and rail safety.
Traffic flow will become more efficient, and connectivity in the Malahar–Samsi segment of Malda district, West Bengal, under the Katihar Division, is set to enhance considerably, as per officials.
This project will directly benefit students, daily commuters, and local vendors by providing easier access to educational facilities, workplaces, and marketplaces.
Furthermore, it is expected to foster economic growth and regional development, reflecting the Northeast Frontier Railway's ongoing commitment to modernization and passenger-focused infrastructure advancement.
The Northeast Frontier Railway, headquartered in Maligaon near Guwahati, serves the Northeastern states, seven districts of West Bengal, and five districts of Bihar.
