Amritsar, Jan 16 (NationPress) Just one day before its premiere, the President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Harjinder Singh Dhami, addressed a letter to Punjab’s Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, asserting that Kangana Ranaut’s film ‘Emergency’ “distorts Sikh history and may incite public outrage” and should therefore be prohibited in the state.

In his correspondence, Dhami stated, “Should the film be released, it could provoke anger and resentment within the Sikh community. It is thus the government’s duty to ensure that the film is banned in the state.” The SGPC has cautioned that it “will vehemently oppose the film if it is shown.” Additionally, the SGPC President has reached out to all Deputy Commissioners regarding the potential ban.

“In its protest, the SGPC has already presented its executive committee’s resolution to the Chief Secretary of the state, clearly indicating that the screening of this film would not be permitted in Punjab as it has been produced with the intent of defaming Sikhs,” the letter states.

The resolution calls for the Punjab government to prohibit the film’s screening within the state. However, regrettably, the Punjab government under your leadership (Bhagwant Mann) has failed to take any action in this regard. If the film is released on January 17, it will understandably provoke outrage among the Sikh community.

“By concealing facts related to the assaults on the most sacred shrine of the Sikhs, Sri Harmandar Sahib, the paramount temporal seat, Akal Takht Sahib, and other gurdwaras along with the Sikh genocide of 1984, this movie aims to disseminate negativity under an anti-Sikh agenda. Therefore, we reiterate our demand for a ban on the film's screening in Punjab. If it is released, we will be compelled to protest strongly,” Dhami remarked.

The SGPC, often referred to as the mini-parliament of the Sikh faith, oversees gurdwaras across Punjab, including the holiest of Sikh shrines, Harmandar Sahib (commonly known as the Golden Temple) located in Amritsar.

Following several delays, Kangana Ranaut has officially revealed the new release date for her highly awaited film ‘Emergency’. The movie is set to debut in theaters on January 17, having originally been scheduled for September 6, 2024.
