Amit Shah in Bhopal on 3 October for Gopalak Conference, dairy push
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah arrived in Bhopal on the night of 2 October and is set to anchor a packed schedule on 3 October centred on Madhya Pradesh's dairy and livestock economy. The centrepiece is a state-level Gopalak Conference expected to draw more than 35,000 cattle rearers and dairy cooperative members from across the region.
What the Gopalak Conference Covers
Participants are arriving from Bhopal and surrounding districts including Sehore, Betul, Rajgarh, Harda, Guna, Ashoknagar, Shajapur, Vidisha, Raisen, and Narmadapuram. Shah is scheduled to distribute bonuses to livestock rearers affiliated with the Bhopal and Indore milk unions and provide financial assistance to gaushalas. Gopalak Didis will be honoured during the event, and approval letters under the Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Kamdhenu Scheme will also be handed out.
Dairy Infrastructure Proposals on the Table
The visit is expected to give fresh momentum to two significant dairy infrastructure projects. A proposed ₹255-crore dairy plant in Ujjain is among the proposals likely to be highlighted. Separately, a facility for formulated and fermented milk products has been established at the Bhopal Milk Union premises at a cost of ₹16.80 crore, aimed at expanding processing capacity for value-added products such as curd, buttermilk, lassi, shrikhand, and mawa.
Broader Agenda: Farmers, Cooperation and Infrastructure
Beyond dairy, Shah's schedule spans a wide range of governance themes — farmers' welfare, cooperative network expansion, the rollout of new criminal laws, higher education, and road infrastructure. He is also expected to be briefed on the state's ongoing Year of Farmer Welfare initiative and the Balram Agriculture Festival. Departmental presentations will be made by the state Home, Animal Husbandry and Dairy, Cooperation, Public Works, and Transport departments. The visit also coincides with the expansion of the Farmer ID system across the state.
State Preparations and Political Significance
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Monday reviewed arrangements for the visit, directing officials to ensure adequate seating, drinking water, sanitation, security, and traffic management. The visit comes amid the Madhya Pradesh government's broader push to use cooperative institutions and dairy infrastructure as pillars of its rural livelihood and agriculture strategy — underscoring a governance alignment between the state and Centre on cooperative-led rural development.
