Shivamogga Student Murder Sparks Alarm Over Drug Crisis in Karnataka Assembly
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, March 11 (NationPress) The tragic murder of a Class 10 student by a group of minors in Shivamogga district has raised alarm within the Karnataka Legislative Assembly this Wednesday, prompting Opposition members to address the escalating drug abuse and deteriorating law and order in the area.
During the Zero Hour discussion, former Home Minister and BJP MLA Araga Jnanendra characterized the event as shocking and inhumane. He noted that the crime occurred near his constituency and underscored the increasing drug problem in Shivamogga.
“Shivamogga is facing a serious drug crisis. It's alarming that boys aged just 15 to 16 have brutally killed another student. This is utterly inhumane,” Jnanendra expressed.
He also questioned the effectiveness of police presence in the area. “The perpetrators must face strict consequences. Since they are minors, there is a risk they could be released. Authorities must ensure they do not receive bail,” he insisted.
Furthermore, Jnanendra mentioned the Rs 15 lakh compensation announced by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for the victim’s family, emphasizing that stringent measures are essential to avert such incidents in the future.
“Police personnel have served in this region for extended periods, and there are allegations of collusion with the drug mafia. Immediate action is crucial. If not, such tragedies will persist,” he warned.
The issue was echoed by JD(S) MLA Sharada Puryanaik, who indicated that the attack occurred on school grounds during special classes for students.
“During the class, one student was called out and targeted by a group. Another student informed the headmaster,” she recounted.
Puryanaik highlighted the responsibility teachers hold for student safety until they leave school property. “In this assault, one student, Sanket, was attacked and sadly passed away en route to the hospital. The family is devastated. Moreover, the ease of access to ganja and other drugs is concerning,” she noted.
She urged the government to trace the source of the drugs and implement robust measures to combat the menace, also suggesting that headmasters be educated about their duties regarding student safety.
In a brief response, Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao stated that the Home Department would provide a comprehensive reply on the issue.
“As per my knowledge, the government has already taken action and detained the accused. Compensation has also been announced. Given the concerns raised about the drug menace, the Home Department will respond accordingly,” he indicated.
The Assembly's discussion was set against the backdrop of heightened tensions in Shivamogga following the death of 15-year-old Sanket, who was reportedly murdered while attempting to defend his friend Girish from a group of minors on February 23.
The victim’s family is demanding severe punishment for the accused and has warned of drastic actions if justice is not served.
This case has stirred controversy as the accused minors belong to a different community, further inflaming tensions in the region.
