Hyderabad/New Delhi, Sep 19 (NationPress) An Indian national was fatally shot by law enforcement in California after allegedly attacking his roommate with a knife earlier this month, according to officials. The family of the deceased has raised concerns about racial bias and is calling for a comprehensive investigation into the events that led to his death. As reported by NDTV, they have also reached out to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for assistance in repatriating his remains back to India.

Authorities stated that Mohammed Nizamuddin, hailing from Mahabubnagar in Telangana, was shot after police found him in his residence in Santa Clara wielding a knife on September 3, restraining his roommate, who had sustained multiple injuries during the altercation.

Officers arrived at the scene following a 911 call regarding a stabbing incident. The situation between Nizamuddin and his roommate escalated, resulting in the attack.

“SCPD officers arrived, encountered the suspect, and were involved in an Officer Involved Shooting. The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The victim was also taken to a local hospital for treatment,” NDTV reported, citing police statements.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office and the Santa Clara Police Department are conducting a joint investigation, which remains active. Updates are expected to be released shortly.

Contrary to police accounts, Nizamuddin’s family claims he was the one who called for police assistance before being shot.

Nizamuddin was pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science at a Florida institution and was employed at a tech firm in California.

The family described him as a reserved and religious individual who had previously voiced concerns regarding racial harassment, wage fraud, and wrongful job termination.

According to NDTV, his family highlighted a LinkedIn post where he wrote: “I have been a victim of racial hatred, racial discrimination, racial harassment, torture, wage fraud, wrongful termination, and obstruction of Justice. Enough is enough; this culture of white supremacy must end.”

He also detailed accusations of food poisoning, eviction, and what he alleged were ongoing surveillance and intimidation from a supposed detective.

His family is demanding a thorough investigation into the allegations made by Nizamuddin and the circumstances surrounding his death.

As reported by NDTV, Amjed Ullah Khan, spokesperson for Majlis Bachao Tehreek, met with Nizamuddin’s father, Mohammed Hasnuddin, and has written to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, urging him to ask the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the Consulate General in San Francisco for a detailed report on the situation and assistance with the repatriation of the young man's remains.
