Bhopal, June 4 (NationPress) In a devastating incident, nine individuals, comprising four children and three women, lost their lives in a horrific accident in Jhabua district, Madhya Pradesh, on Wednesday when a cement mixer truck laden with concrete rolled over onto a van, leading to the instant demise of the van's occupants.
Two individuals managed to survive but sustained serious injuries. The tragic event occurred near the Sajeli railway crossing, within the jurisdiction of the Kalyanpura police station, around 3 a.m., as reported by police officials.
"Due to ongoing construction of an over-bridge and roadworks, vehicles are forced to take a diversion route. The concrete mixer truck was traveling from Thandla to Jhabua when the driver lost control while executing a sudden maneuver. It appears that the driver may have been operating the vehicle recklessly; with the road construction, he could not avoid colliding with a van approaching from the opposite direction at the railway crossing site. The van became lodged against the truck's diesel tank, being dragged for approximately 40-50 feet. A roadside ditch ultimately caused the truck to tip over onto the van, resulting in the tragic loss of nine lives," stated Prem Lal Kurve, Additional Superintendent of Police, Jhabua, during an interview with IANS.
A young girl and a child survived, with the bodies of the others providing a protective barrier.
"One of the critically injured survivors, Payal Parmar, has been transferred to Dahod, Gujarat, for medical treatment, while Ashu Bamnia is currently in stable condition at Thandla Hospital," the officer added.
The victims were reportedly returning from a marriage ceremony in Manpura village.
The deceased have been identified as Mukesh Khaped, aged 40, his wife Shavli, 35, their son Vinod, 16, and daughter Payal, 12.
Other fatalities include Madhi Bamnia, 38, Vijay Bamnia, 14, Kanta Bamnia, 14, Ragini Bamnia, 9, and Jhkali Parmar, 35.
The injured, Payal Parmar, 19, and five-year-old Ashu Bamnia, have been referred to hospitals in Dahod and Thandla for urgent care.
All passengers in the van hailed from Shivgarh Mahuda in Meghnagar tehsil.
Emergency response teams, including police from Thandla and Meghnagar, swiftly reached the scene with ambulances to transport the injured and deceased to Thandla Civil Hospital and Meghnagar Hospital.
The truck driver fled the scene, prompting authorities to investigate the circumstances of the tragedy, with ongoing efforts to locate the missing driver. The incident has left the community in distress, with further updates anticipated as the investigation unfolds.
