Agartala, March 16 (NationPress) The government of Tripura has made a significant announcement regarding a 5% increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for 183,582 government employees and pensioners within the state.
This declaration was made on the second day of the ongoing Budget session of the Tripura Assembly by Chief Minister Manik Saha, who stated that the updated rates of DA and DR would be effective starting from April 1, 2026.
The announcement was met with enthusiastic applause from members of the treasury bench.
Chief Minister Saha revealed this information shortly after the Finance, Planning, and Coordination Minister Pranajit Singha Roy presented the 2026–27 Budget in the Assembly.
“Implementing the increased DA and DR will require the state government to allocate an additional Rs 500 crore annually,” Saha informed the House.
Opposition members, including former minister Sudip Roy Barman from Congress and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury from CPI-M, expressed their concerns that the DA and DR increase should have been included in the Finance Minister’s budget proposals.
“The Chief Minister has deviated from established norms and conventions,” Roy Barman alleged during a heated exchange between the treasury and opposition benches.
Jitendra Chaudhury, also a former minister and CPI-M Tripura state secretary, urged the Chief Minister to provide clarity on the pending DA and DR dues owed to state government employees and pensioners.
While Saha endeavored to address the queries raised by the Leader of the Opposition, disruptions over other issues hindered his ability to complete his response, leading to Acting Speaker Ram Prasad Paul adjourning the House.
A Finance Department official indicated that this decision would benefit over 102,563 government employees and 81,019 pensioners.
The official noted that since the BJP-led government assumed power in March 2018, they have revised pay scales effective from October 1, 2018, in line with the recommendations of the 7th Central Pay Commission.
Since then, the state government has periodically announced additional DA and DR hikes for employees and pensioners.
State government employees and pensioners have persistently demanded parity in DA and DR with their Central government counterparts.
Meanwhile, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath mentioned that the Assembly's Budget session is set to continue until March 25.
This ongoing session marks the first assembly sitting in Tripura for this year.
