United Nations, Sep 22 (NationPress) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday urged the global community to “silence the guns, end the suffering, build bridges, and create stability and prosperity,” in his message regarding the International Day of Peace, which is commemorated annually on September 21.

Peace cannot wait,” as the world ravaged by conflict yearns for tranquility, stated the UN chief. This year’s observance of the International Day of Peace calls on each individual to join in that plea, he added.

Globally, lives are being torn apart, childhoods are being cut short, and fundamental human dignity is being trampled upon amid the harsh realities of war, Guterres remarked.

“We are witnessing a surge in conflict. International laws are being disregarded, and record numbers of individuals are being displaced from their homes,” he noted.

“All they seek is peace. Peace is a collective responsibility,” emphasized the top UN official, pointing out that the repercussions of war extend globally, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.

Guterres highlighted that while sustainable development fosters peace, nine out of the ten nations facing the most significant development challenges are embroiled in conflict.

He called on the international community to “confront the racism, dehumanization, and misinformation that fuel the flames of conflict.”

“Instead, we must adopt a language of respect and open our hearts to others,” he stressed. “Where there is peace, there is hope” — families unite, communities rebuild, and children learn and play, the UN chief affirmed.

The International Day of Peace was instituted in 1981 by the UN General Assembly. Two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously designated the day as a time for non-violence and ceasefire.

This year’s theme is “Act Now for a Peaceful World.”
