Dhaka, Dec 19 (NationPress) As violence surges in Bangladesh following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson for the radical Inqilab Mancha group, the U.S. Embassy in Dhaka has issued a warning urging American nationals in the region to remain vigilant, highlighting that peaceful gatherings can quickly become confrontational.
Hadi passed away after a prolonged struggle for survival while receiving treatment in a Singapore hospital, where he had been for six days.
On Thursday night, Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus of the interim government confirmed Hadi's death to the nation.
According to reports from the media, the U.S. Embassy indicated that Hadi's remains would likely arrive in Dhaka on Friday evening. It is anticipated that his funeral prayers will be conducted on Manik Mia Avenue in front of the National Parliament Building on Saturday.
“Expect significant traffic disruptions in the area and across Dhaka. There will likely be large spontaneous or organized gatherings throughout Bangladesh,” the embassy noted.
“Travelers are advised to reassess their plans for travel through and around Dhaka during these times and to allocate additional time for potential delays. U.S. citizens should stay alert and be aware that events meant to be peaceful can escalate into confrontations and violence. It is advisable to steer clear of demonstrations and exercise caution near large crowds,” the embassy added.
The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) also released a travel advisory, urging British nationals to limit travel to the Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh, citing frequent reports of violence and other criminal activities, particularly in remote regions.
“On Saturday, December 20, Bangladesh will observe a National Day of Mourning. Stay alert for local updates and adhere to any guidance provided,” the advisory emphasized, reflecting on the surge of violence following Hadi's death.
Bangladesh is experiencing an alarming increase in violence and a deteriorating law and order situation under the Yunus-led interim government.
