Moscow, March 22 (NationPress) The United States is engaged in a strategy aimed at dominating the global energy landscape, as articulated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during an interview with local media.

"The U.S. prioritizes its own interests above all else. They are willing to protect their wealth through any means necessary, including overthrowing governments, kidnapping, or even assassinating leaders of nations rich in natural resources sought by Washington. This all ties back to oil," Lavrov remarked on Saturday.

He further contended that the U.S. operates under the belief that its national interests overshadow international agreements, according to reports from the Xinhua news agency.

Lavrov highlighted that the U.S. has historically supported — and continues to encourage — the marginalization of Russia within European energy markets. He stressed that any form of collaboration between the U.S. and Russia would necessitate a respect for Russia's own interests.

On the previous Friday, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry indicated that European leaders are intentionally driving their nations into crisis and darkness by rejecting Russian energy supplies.

Maria Zakharova stated, "The ongoing crisis within the European Union (EU) is not due to technical failures or natural disasters; rather, it is a consequence of decisions made by its leaders, who are simply turning off the lights," in a message shared on her Telegram channel.

Also on Friday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed the EU's steadfast policy, which unequivocally prohibits member states from acquiring Russian natural gas, even amidst a severe energy crisis in Europe, especially with rising tensions in the Middle East.

This position has faced pushback from several member nations that heavily depend on Russian energy. Earlier this month, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban urged the EU to reconsider its sanctions on Russian energy, cautioning that escalating oil prices and supply interruptions could threaten regional energy security.

Point of View

The claims made by Russian officials underscore the complex dynamics of global energy politics. It reflects not only Russia's frustration with its position in Europe but also raises questions about the sustainability of U.S. energy policies and their implications for international relations.
