Maharashtra CM Fadnavis Confirms Women's Reservation to Start in 2029 Lok Sabha Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, April 15 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, announced on Wednesday that revisions to the Women’s Reservation Bill were essential to facilitate the prompt execution of the law, as the delays in the Census process had hindered the delimitation timeline. “As many are aware, the Census took longer than expected, which in turn disrupted the delimitation schedule. Without political determination, the implementation of women's reservation could have been pushed back to 2034 or even later,” CM Fadnavis stated during an event to discuss the proposed Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
“It has now been agreed that delimitation will be finalized within one year, utilizing the 2011 Census data, eliminating the need to wait for the current Census to be completed. These adjustments ensure that women’s reservation will be enacted during the 2029 general elections and will not face further delays,” he added.
The Chief Minister criticized certain opposition parties for opposing delimitation while professing support for the reservation law. “They claim they are not against the Women’s Reservation Bill but are against delimitation. They know that without delimitation, the implementation of women’s reservation is impossible. These individuals are, in reality, opposing women’s representation,” asserted CM Fadnavis.
He expressed optimism that the new measures would greatly boost women’s representation in both Parliament and state assemblies, indicating that the effects of the reservation policy would be noticeable by the 2029 elections. “While the reservation Bill guarantees a 33 percent quota, I assure you that nearly 40 percent of the seats in the next Lok Sabha will be occupied by women. Their voices will be amplified,” he declared.
Additionally, the Chief Minister highlighted the presence of competent women in state administration whose potential had been overlooked in the past. “Since our government assumed power in Maharashtra, we have appointed women to significant roles such as Chief Secretary, Forest Chief, Director General of Police, and now BMC Commissioner. They earned these positions based on merit,” he remarked.
