Assam CM Comments on Fast-Track Court for Zubeen Garg Case: Bail Outcomes Uncontrolled
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Feb 24 (NationPress) Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, spoke on Tuesday regarding the transfer of the case related to acclaimed Assamese artist Zubeen Garg to a fast-track court. He emphasized that while the government can facilitate a quicker trial, it cannot influence the judicial outcomes, including the potential granting of bail.
During a press conference, Sarma expressed the government's dedication to delivering swift justice but warned against holding the executive accountable for judicial decisions. “We can expedite the case through a fast-track court, but if bail is approved at a later stage, I should not be held responsible,” the Chief Minister remarked.
Sarma reaffirmed that the state does not interfere with judicial matters and honors the courts’ independence. Fast-track courts are intended for the rapid resolution of cases, yet legal procedures must adhere to due process and rely on evidence-based decision-making.
In light of public scrutiny and discussions around the case, CM Sarma stated that public opinion alone cannot determine judicial outcomes. “I have immense respect for those genuinely seeking justice. However, individuals who politicize sensitive matters should not expect me to yield to external pressures,” he added.
The Chief Minister also highlighted that the firm approach of the state government on law and order has resulted in the detention of festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sarma, and two band members—Shekhar Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta—for the past five months.
“We have detained the accused for five months,” Sarma asserted, emphasizing that the government does not take leniency in serious offenses.
CM Sarma mentioned his intention to consult with Garg’s family before making any decisions regarding the fast-track court proceedings.
It is noteworthy that Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sarma, Shekhar Goswami, and Amritprabha Mahanta are facing murder charges as per the Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the unexpected death of Assam’s cultural icon, Zubeen Garg, during a sea outing in Singapore on September 19 last year.
These statements come amidst increasing public concern following the transfer of the Zubeen Garg case to a fast-track court, with various segments of society advocating for expedited justice.
The singer, a significant cultural figure in Assam, has a vast following, and updates regarding the case have garnered substantial attention.
CM Sarma urged for patience and faith in the legal system, asserting that justice should unfold without political interference. He reiterated that the government’s role is to support a fair and prompt judicial process rather than sway verdicts.
