LPG supply steady: 1.72 crore cylinders delivered in 4 days amid geopolitical strain
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Centre on Monday, 25 May 2026 reported that approximately 1.72 crore LPG cylinders were delivered across the country over the preceding four days, exceeding bookings of nearly 1.66 crore cylinders. The update, shared at a briefing at the National Media Centre, New Delhi, came from officials of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Ministry of External Affairs, who outlined fuel availability and steps to maintain stability across key sectors.
Supply Position and Household Priority
Despite acknowledged challenges stemming from prevailing geopolitical tensions, the government said domestic LPG supply to household consumers has been prioritised to prevent disruption. Crucially, officials confirmed that no dry-outs have been reported at any LPG distributorship so far — a key indicator that the distribution network remains functional under stress.
Digital Booking and Anti-Diversion Measures
The government noted a sharp uptick in digital transactions. Online LPG cylinder bookings reached nearly 99 per cent on an industry-wide basis on Sunday, while Delivery Authentication Code (DAC)-based deliveries rose to around 95 per cent. Under the DAC system, consumers receive a unique code on their registered mobile numbers at the time of delivery — a mechanism specifically designed to prevent diversion of cylinders away from intended beneficiaries.
Commercial LPG and Auto LPG Volumes
On the commercial front, allocation has been increased to nearly 70 per cent of pre-crisis levels, including a 10 per cent reform-linked allocation. During the same four-day window, about 24,557 metric tonnes of commercial LPG were sold nationwide. Public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) also sold nearly 942 metric tonnes of Auto LPG in the period. Cumulatively, since 1 May 2026, a total of 1,56,898 metric tonnes of commercial LPG has been sold across the country.
Push for 5 kg Free Trade LPG Cylinders
The ministry highlighted a parallel effort to promote 5 kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders as a flexible, smaller-format option. Approximately 1.96 lakh such cylinders were sold over the past four days. Since 3 April 2026, PSU oil marketing companies have conducted nearly 15,400 awareness camps across states and Union Territories, resulting in the sale of over 2.45 lakh 5 kg FTL cylinders. On Sunday alone, around 1,487 cylinders were sold through 82 such camps.
What to Watch
With geopolitical pressures showing no immediate signs of easing, the government's ability to sustain delivery volumes above booking levels will be closely tracked in the coming weeks. The continued scale-up of DAC-based deliveries and awareness camps signals a longer-term administrative push to tighten the LPG supply chain against both diversion and demand shocks.
