New Delhi, March 2 (NationPress) — In a significant advancement for their developmental collaboration, India and Japan have formalized a pivotal agreement aimed at fostering sustainable development in the nation's most disadvantaged areas. The NITI Aayog and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) executed the Record of Discussions for the second phase of the "Project for Promotion of the Programme for Japan–India Cooperative Actions Towards Sustainable Development Goals."
This agreement was officiated in the presence of Rohit Kumar, Additional Secretary and Mission Director for the Aspirational Districts and Blocks Programme at NITI Aayog, alongside Takeuchi Takuro, Chief Representative of JICA India.
The initiative is set to enhance collaboration between the two nations in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), placing a particular emphasis on India's Aspirational Districts and Blocks.
These regions encompass some of the nation’s most deprived areas, where enhancing basic services and economic opportunities remains a top priority.
During the signing ceremony, Rohit Kumar expressed that this partnership merges the strengths of both entities, leveraging shared expertise and practical insights derived from their respective experiences.
He emphasized that this collaboration is expected to accelerate inclusive growth and elevate the standard of governance in these districts and blocks.
The project, under the Aspirational Districts and Blocks Programme, aims to fortify policies and implementation frameworks across six critical domains: health and nutrition, education, agriculture and water management, financial inclusion and skill enhancement, basic infrastructure, and global partnerships.
A significant focus will be placed on enhancing institutional capacity, refining monitoring and evaluation processes, and ensuring effective local-level implementation of the SDGs.
Additionally, the initiative will encourage people-to-people exchanges, capacity building efforts, host Japan–India knowledge forums, and facilitate the identification and dissemination of best practices.
Specific support will be directed towards selected districts and blocks to enhance their performance on essential development metrics.
JICA India's Chief Representative, Takeuchi Takuro, commended the progress achieved under India's Aspirational Districts and Blocks initiatives.
He remarked that India's monitoring systems at both district and block levels rank among the best globally and underscored that this project epitomizes a mutually advantageous partnership between India and Japan.
