New Delhi, Aug 29 (NationPress) India’s broadband subscriber count increased from 979.71 million at the close of June to 984.69 million at the end of July, reflecting a monthly growth rate of 0.51 percent, as reported by the government on Friday.
This growth was primarily driven by mobile broadband services, which maintain a significant lead with 930.41 million users, followed by fixed wired broadband at 45.49 million and fixed wireless broadband at 8.79 million.
Mobile broadband experienced a growth of 0.39 percent, while wired broadband saw a higher growth of 1.80 percent, and fixed wireless broadband achieved the most significant increase at 7.09 percent during July.
Among the largest broadband providers in India, Bharti Airtel leads with 307.07 million subscribers, followed by Vodafone Idea at 127.58 million, BSNL at 34.27 million, and Atria Convergence Technologies at 2.34 million.
The wireline segment also saw growth, with subscribers rising to 48.11 million in July from 47.49 million the previous month, marking a 1.32 percent increase. BSNL, MTNL, and APSFL together account for approximately 20.5 percent of this market.
The wireless subscriber base, which includes mobile and 5G fixed wireless access (FWA), also witnessed a slight increase to 1,171.91 million in July from 1,170.88 million in June.
Urban subscriptions rose by 0.50 percent to 641.03 million, while rural subscriptions dropped by 0.40 percent to 530.88 million.
Additionally, the government noted that 15.41 million requests for mobile number portability (MNP) were recorded in July.
With 984.69 million broadband connections and over 1.22 billion total telephone subscribers, India solidifies its status as the world's second-largest telecom market, propelled by mobile data consumption, increasing fixed broadband adoption, and swift 5G expansion.
In the prior month, the total count of broadband subscribers was 979.71 million, reflecting a 0.5 percent rise from 974.87 million at the end of May, according to TRAI data.
