India's primary energy supply rises to 39,055 PJ in 2024-25: Lok Sabha
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
India's total primary energy supply (TPES) rose to 39,055 Petajoules in 2024-25, up from 37,936 Petajoules in 2023-24, the government informed the Lok Sabha on 22 July 2025. The figures, shared by Minister of State (Independent Charge) Rao Inderjit Singh, reflect a year-on-year increase of roughly 1,119 Petajoules — equivalent to approximately 311 billion kilowatt-hours of additional energy throughput.
Renewable Energy Potential Surges
India's total renewable energy potential more than doubled in a single year, rising from 21,09,655 MW as of 31 March 2024 to 47,04,043 MW as of March 2025, according to the minister's statement. This sharp expansion reflects accelerated assessments of wind, solar, and hybrid resource potential across states, though installed capacity and assessed potential remain distinct metrics.
Notably, the scale of India's assessed renewable potential now dwarfs its current installed base by a wide margin, underscoring both the opportunity and the infrastructure gap that remains to be bridged.
Statistical Modernisation Under MoSPI
The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has overhauled its data collection infrastructure, shifting primary surveys to digital platforms including Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) and the e-SIGMA system. These platforms incorporate real-time validation checks, AI-enabled chatbots, and multilingual interfaces, Singh told the House.
The overhaul has cut the time lag for survey data release from 8-9 months to between 45 and 90 days. Annual survey results are now published within 90-120 days of survey completion; quarterly results within 45-60 days; and monthly results within 15-30 days.
GDP, IIP and CPI Base Years Revised
In a significant methodological update, MoSPI has revised the base years of three key macroeconomic indicators to better reflect the current structure of the Indian economy. The base year for Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has been updated from 2011-12 to 2022-23, following recommendations of the Advisory Committee on National Accounts Statistics (ACNAS).
Similarly, the base year for the All India Index of Industrial Production (IIP) has moved from 2011-12 to 2022-23, and the Consumer Price Index (CPI) base has shifted from 2012=100 to 2024=100. These revisions are intended to align India's official statistics with evolving international standards.
Transparency and Public Access
To strengthen public accountability, MoSPI has made anonymised unit-level survey data available through a revamped Microdata Portal, enabling researchers, policymakers, and civil society to access granular official statistics for evidence-based analysis. Singh emphasised that physical scrutiny by senior officers and regular field-staff training continue alongside the digital upgrades to maintain data integrity.
With energy demand projected to keep rising alongside India's economic expansion, the trajectory of TPES and the pace of renewable capacity addition will remain closely watched indicators in the months ahead.
