New Delhi, April 15 (NationPress) The overall labour force participation rate (LFPR) in India for individuals aged 15 years and older remained unchanged at 55.4% in March, slightly down from 55.9% in February, as reported by the Ministry of Statistics on Wednesday.

In March, the Worker Population Ratio (WPR) for those aged 15 years and above showed similar stability in urban areas. The overall WPR was estimated at 52.6%. Specifically, the WPR in urban regions was 46.8% in March, down from 47.0% in February, while rural areas reported a WPR of 55.5% compared to 56.3% the previous month, according to the ministry's announcement.

Previous figures indicated that February 2026 was a significant month for the urban job market, noted by an increase in women’s participation and a substantial drop in unemployment rates across both rural and urban sectors.

The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), which is conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO), MoSPI, serves as the primary source for data on participation in activities as well as employment and unemployment conditions within the population. The methodology for the PLFS survey was updated in January 2025 to allow for monthly and quarterly estimates of key labour force indicators.

Results from the PLFS are published in Monthly Bulletins, which provide estimates of critical labour market indicators, including the Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), Worker Population Ratio (WPR), and Unemployment Rate (UR) at the national level using the Current Weekly Status (CWS) approach.

The Monthly Bulletins covering data from April 2025 through February 2026 have already been published, making the current bulletin for March the twelfth in the series.

The all-India estimates are derived from a survey of 374,879 individuals, with 213,679 surveyed in rural areas and 161,200 in urban regions.

Point of View

I observe that while the labour force participation rate has stabilized, the slight decrease may indicate challenges that need addressing. The data suggests a resilient urban job market, but we must remain vigilant about ensuring sustainable employment growth.
