New Delhi, Dec 11 (NationPress) IndiGo's Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta announced on Thursday that the airline's Board will engage external technical specialists to collaborate with management in uncovering the fundamental reasons behind the significant flight disruptions experienced last week.

In a comprehensive statement, Mehta expressed that these experts will aid in preventing similar large-scale operational failures in the future.

He initiated his message by extending apologies to passengers impacted by the disruptions that took place from December 3 to 5.

He noted that numerous travelers were left stranded, with many missing crucial personal gatherings, business engagements, medical appointments, and international flight connections. The situation was exacerbated by baggage delays.

“We are genuinely, genuinely sorry,” he remarked, recognizing that the airline did not meet customer expectations.

Mehta clarified that the Board had initially opted not to release an early statement as it wanted CEO Pieter Elbers and the management team to prioritize the restoration of services.

“IndiGo is currently operating over 1,900 flights daily, serving all 138 destinations, with on-time performance back to standard levels,” he confirmed.

Mehta acknowledged that IndiGo had faced both justified and unjustified criticism, admitting that the valid criticism was that the airline let its passengers down.

He assured that IndiGo would thoroughly review what went wrong and provide explanations to customers, the government, shareholders, and staff.

“As part of this initiative, the Board has resolved to involve independent technical experts to assist in the investigation and corrective measures,” Mehta added.

He also addressed various allegations, including claims that IndiGo orchestrated the crisis, sought to manipulate government regulations, or compromised safety.

“The airline strictly adhered to the updated pilot fatigue regulations and did not attempt to circumvent them at any time,” Mehta stated.

“The disruptions resulted from a mix of internal issues and unforeseen external factors, including minor technical difficulties, winter schedule adjustments, adverse weather, congestion within the aviation system, and the implementation of new crew rostering protocols,” he elaborated.

Mehta underscored that the Board had been actively involved throughout, holding an emergency meeting on the first day of the disruptions and establishing a Crisis Management Group that has met daily.

“Refunds amounting to several hundred crores have already been processed, assistance has been provided for lodging and travel, and outstanding delayed baggage is being delivered,” Mehta remarked.
