Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 23 (NationPress) In a significant downturn, global oil prices experienced a sharp decline on Monday, with Brent crude plummeting over 13 percent. This drop followed an announcement by US President Donald Trump that he would temporarily suspend military actions against Iran, emphasizing that discussions between the two nations had been "productive".
Brent crude futures fell approximately $17, nearing a 15 percent decrease, reaching a low of $96 per barrel. Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate crude saw a decline of about $13, or 13.5 percent, settling at $85.28.
This sharp decline in prices came as concerns over potential supply disruptions diminished amidst indications of a de-escalation in the ongoing conflict.
President Trump stated that he had directed the Department of Defense to delay planned airstrikes on Iranian energy facilities for a period of five days.
He noted that this decision followed "very good and productive conversations" that took place between the United States and Iran over the past two days.
In related market movements, Gift Nifty futures also rose significantly, climbing to 23,533.50 compared to the previous close of 22,465, marking an increase of 1,068.5 points or 4.75 percent.
By around 5:20 PM, the Gift Nifty futures were up 853.50 points or 3.80 percent, reaching 23,318.50.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump mentioned that the pause in military operations would depend on the progress of ongoing discussions aimed at alleviating tensions in the Middle East.
He hinted that the choice to delay military action was influenced by the "tenor and tone" of these talks, indicating a potential diplomatic breakthrough.
Following Trump’s announcement to postpone military strikes, gold and silver prices in both the MCX and international markets saw a significant rebound.
Globally, spot gold reduced its losses and was down 2.6 percent, recovering from a more drastic earlier decline of 5 percent.
Domestically, MCX gold also showed a strong recovery, minimizing its losses to around 3 percent after a substantial fall of nearly 10 percent earlier in the trading session.
