Guwahati, Nov 7 (NationPress) On Friday, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman toured the emerging semiconductor manufacturing site of Tata Electronics Limited (TEL) located in Jagiroad, situated in the Morigaon district of Assam. This initiative marks a significant milestone in India's semiconductor agenda.

The Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility, which is being developed by Tata Electronics, is poised to become one of the nation's leading manufacturing centers for advanced chip packaging and testing.

Upon commencement of operations, this plant is anticipated to greatly enhance India's capabilities within the high-value semiconductor supply chain, thereby diminishing reliance on imports and bolstering the country's standing in global technology manufacturing.

During her visit, Minister Sitharaman assessed the project's progress and engaged with officials and engineers responsible for its development. She commended the swift implementation of the initiative and emphasized that such projects in the Northeast reflect the government's dedication to fostering balanced industrial growth across all regions.

“This project signifies a transformative leap towards achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a self-sufficient India in semiconductor production,” stated Sitharaman.

“It will not only generate job opportunities for the youth in Assam and neighboring regions but also establish the Northeast as a crucial participant in the country’s technology-driven growth narrative,” she added.

The Morigaon facility is part of a broader array of government-backed semiconductor initiatives under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).

The Centre’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) and Design Linked Incentive (DLI) schemes have been vital in drawing significant private investments into the sector, thereby fostering a robust ecosystem for chip fabrication, assembly, and design.

Officials indicated that the Jagiroad plant will play a critical role in the assembly and testing procedures for advanced semiconductor devices utilized in consumer electronics, automotive, telecommunications, and industrial machinery.

This project also highlights the government's emphasis on 'Make in India' and the strategic objective of attaining technological self-sufficiency in crucial sectors such as electronics and digital infrastructure.

As Assam emerges as a new hub for high-tech industries, Sitharaman’s visit illustrates the Centre’s increasing focus on integrating the Northeast into India's extensive industrial and innovation framework.
