South Korean Display Manufacturers Keep Vigil on Middle East Tensions

Key Takeaways
Seoul, March 12 (NationPress) Leaders from South Korea's display manufacturing sector expressed on Thursday their vigilant observation of the possible ramifications stemming from the ongoing US-Iran conflict, amid fears that the turmoil in the Middle East could lead to inflation and increase production expenses.
"Should the conflict persist, we can expect a significant rise in the cost burden of raw materials," stated Samsung Display's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Yi Chung during a press briefing prior to the general assembly of the Korea Display Industry Association in Seoul.
"Although current conditions are challenging due to escalating memory chip prices, the ongoing war is anticipated to spur inflation, complicating matters for the latter half of the year," Yi noted, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
This outlook follows industry apprehensions that surging global memory chip prices, driven by the artificial intelligence (AI) surge, may prompt smartphone manufacturers to reduce their shipments due to elevated expenses, ultimately dampening the demand for display panels.
"While the performance of memory chip manufacturers might be robust, their clients face considerable challenges," Yi remarked. "It's essential for companies to lower production costs and collaborate with partners to bolster competitiveness."
LG Display's CEO Jeong Chul-dong also indicated that his organization is attentively observing the Middle Eastern situation, despite it not yet having a direct effect on the company.
"Finished product prices are climbing due to rising memory chip costs, and we are currently evaluating the potential impacts," Jeong stated. "We intend to adapt our strategies in response to shifts in memory chip supply."
Jeong emphasized that the company will maintain its efforts to strengthen its financial position and secure stable profits to ensure solid performance in the first half of the year, according to the report.
