What Does the Union Budget Say About the New Freight Corridor Between Gujarat's Surat and Dankuni in Poll-Bound Bengal?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 1 (NationPress) During the presentation of the Budget for the fiscal year 2026-27, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a dedicated freight corridor that will link Surat in Gujarat with Dankuni in West Bengal.
This new freight corridor aims to create a direct connection between the two regions, facilitating enhanced logistics and freight transportation.
Moreover, the Finance Minister proposed the operationalization of 20 new national waterways over the next five years, to promote an eco-friendly route for cargo.
The significance of this dedicated freight corridor is heightened as Bengal prepares for elections later this year. This corridor will pass through various states in both Eastern and Western India, linking the prosperous industrial zones of Gujarat with Bengal, which lags behind in several growth metrics.
The initiative underscores the Centre's commitment to bringing substantial projects to Bengal and fostering a conducive environment for rapid development.
In addition to this, the Finance Minister introduced plans for "rare earth corridors" in four states.
Dedicated corridors for minerals will be established in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh, two of which are also heading for Assembly elections this year.
"The scheme for rare earth permanent magnets was initiated in November 2025. We now propose to assist the mineral-rich states of Odisha, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu in creating dedicated rare earth corridors to enhance mining, processing, research, and manufacturing," stated FM Sitharaman in her ninth Budget address.
Importantly, rare earth elements are crucial in manufacturing strategic equipment and fighter jets.
These elements have recently become vital assets in the geopolitical arena, with nations competing for significant shares.
Currently, China dominates the rare earth market, controlling 60% of global mining and over 90% of the processing capacity.
This announcement represents a move towards bolstering the country’s domestic capabilities, thus decreasing reliance on foreign entities, especially China.
