Did the Delhi HC Deny Rajpal Yadav’s Request for More Time to Surrender?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 4 (NationPress) The Delhi High Court has firmly dismissed Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav’s request for additional time to report to jail authorities due to multiple cheque bounce allegations.
A single-judge Bench led by Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma stated that there were no valid reasons to grant further leniency, emphasizing that the order for Yadav to surrender was made after he consistently failed to keep previous commitments to the court. “You were given two days to surrender, citing your presence in Bombay. There is no justification left for leniency. You must surrender by 4 p.m. today,” Justice Sharma remarked.
On Monday, the High Court ordered the actor to surrender to the designated Jail Superintendent by 4 p.m. on February 4, highlighting his repeated neglect of settlement obligations despite multiple allowances.
Rajpal Yadav faced conviction and sentencing in 2024 regarding cheque bounce cases under the Negotiable Instruments Act. His sentence had been temporarily suspended after he indicated a willingness to resolve the issue amicably with the complainant, leading to a referral for mediation.
However, the court noted that no payments had been made for nearly a year, despite various timelines and assurances given.
Justice Sharma remarked that ample leniency had been extended and concluded that there was no reason to prolong the indulgence offered to the actor.
While instructing him to surrender, the court permitted him time until February 4, acknowledging his professional commitments in Mumbai. The matter is slated for discussion on February 5 to ensure compliance by the relevant jail authorities.
