Mumbai, Sep 22 (NationPress) Amidst the backlash regarding Poonam Pandey's role as Mandodari, the wife of Ravan, in the renowned Luv-Kush Ramleela in Delhi, the organizing committee has released a video addressing the ongoing debate.
In a video shared by the UNESCO recognized Luv-Kush Ramleela team, Poonam discusses her commitment to fasting for nine days to ensure her body and mind are pure.
Poonam expresses her excitement, stating: “In Delhi's Red Fort, the world-famous Luv-Kush Ramleela, I have the opportunity to portray Mandodari. I am filled with joy and anticipation.”
She emphasizes the significance of Mandodari, saying, “This character is incredibly important. Mandodari is Ravan's wife, and I am eager to embody this beautiful role.”
Poonam also mentioned her decision to fast for nine days, coinciding with Navratri, to maintain her mental and physical cleanliness for the role. “I want my body and mind to be well-prepared. Jai Shri Ram,” she added.
Last week, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) raised concerns over Poonam's casting as Mandodari, highlighting her controversial past, including a 2011 incident where she vowed to strip if India won the ODI World Cup and a false death announcement in 2024. They argue that such actions could offend devotees.
Reports indicate that the VHP believes casting in Ramayana-themed performances should prioritize not only acting skills but also cultural sensitivity.
Starting from September 22, this year's Ramleela at the Red Fort will also feature notable actors such as Arya Babbar as Ravan, Kinshuk Vaidya as Ram, Rini Arya as Sita, and BJP MP Manoj Tiwari as Parashurama.
