Shilpa Shinde defends false molestation confession amid arrest calls
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Actress Shilpa Shinde on 4 June hit back at growing demands for her arrest, days after she publicly admitted that the 2016 sexual harassment allegations she had levelled against Sanjay Kohli, producer of 'Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain!', were fabricated. Facing a social media backlash in Mumbai, the former Bigg Boss winner defended her decision to speak up now, insisting her conscience left her no choice.
What Shilpa said in her response
In a video posted on her social media handle, Shinde accused critics of judging her on the basis of a single clip lifted from a longer podcast conversation. ‘Passing judgment on a single line without watching the entire podcast is a poor approach by paid PR. Thanks to my well-wishers for understanding me,' she captioned the clip.
Speaking in Hindi, she said, ‘I am not standing in front of you to justify myself. I am standing in front of my own conscience because that lie was a lie. Nobody asked me to say it. I could never live with that lie.' She added that she had been ‘contemplating suicide' during that period and felt she had ‘no other option' at the time.
The original allegations and the show
The controversy traces back to 2016, when Shinde exited the popular &T sitcom 'Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain!', where she played the much-loved Angoori Bhabhi. She had accused producer Sanjay Kohli of sexual harassment and inappropriate advances — allegations Kohli had denied at the time, calling them baseless.
Her recent admission came during an appearance on the podcast hosted by comedians Bharti Singh and Harssh Limbachiyaa, where she said simply, ‘Woh jhoot tha' (It was a lie), while attempting to explain the circumstances.
Calls for arrest and online backlash
The confession triggered sharp reactions across X (formerly Twitter), with the National Council for Men reportedly demanding action against Shinde for allegedly filing a false complaint. Several users argued that her admission warranted a police case, with one post stating that no action would be ‘a huge shame on Mumbai Police'.
Others framed the episode as evidence of misuse of women-protection laws, while a section of commenters acknowledged her courage in coming forward, however belatedly.
Shinde pushes back
Responding to the criticism, Shinde said, ‘Producers who abuse artists continue to work for 10-15 years, but artists like us are expected to stay silent.' She added that she had ‘already left the show' and ‘accepted the blame' long before the latest disclosure, ruling out any financial motive.
She also issued a qualified apology to Kohli, saying, ‘The word sorry is very small, but he also knows the situation I was in.'
What happens next
No formal complaint or police action against Shinde has been reported so far. Industry watchers say the episode could reopen a wider debate on accountability for false complaints, even as advocacy groups warn against using one case to discredit genuine harassment survivors.
