Sudipto Sen Critiques CBFC: ‘Why is Violence Lauded but Truth Challenged?’
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, February 27 (NationPress) Director Sudipto Sen, who directed ‘The Kerala Story’, has expressed his support for the forthcoming film ‘The Kerala Story 2 – Goes Beyond’ alongside his project ‘Charak’. He noted that audiences are inclined towards movies like ‘Animal’ and ‘Dhurandhar’, yet productions like ‘The Kerala Story’ and ‘Charak’ face labels of being “propaganda”.
During the trailer launch of ‘Charak’, the director discussed the unfair criticism certain films receive, hindering their opportunity to convey their narratives.
He stated, “Our censor board adheres to a double standard. Many regulations are antiquated, with the Cinematograph Act originating from 1952. Although the Shyam Benegal Committee report's recommendations were accepted a few years back, the law’s implications remain inadequately enforced. We will persist in voicing our concerns across various platforms. I encourage everyone to highlight the struggles filmmakers face in such contexts; your support is invaluable.”
The film stars Anjali Patil, Sahidur Rahaman, Subrat Dutta, Shashi Bhushan, Nalneesh Neel, Shankhadeep, and Shounak Shyamal, and explores real-life issues surrounding blind faith and occult practices in the rural areas of India.
He elaborated, “The concept for ‘Charak’ emerged from my enduring interest in faith and the compelling rituals present in our country’s rural regions. My travels exposed me to the profound emotional significance of the traditional Charak festival, an experience that deeply resonated with me. This evolved over time into a narrative examining belief, devotion, and the delicate boundary between faith and fear, ultimately shaping ‘Charak’ into a film.”
Produced by Dr. Jayantilal Gada (PEN Studios), directed by Shieladitya Moulik, and produced by Dhaval Gada and Sipping Tea Cinemas, in collaboration with Sudipto Sen Productions, with Rajesh Bhatt as associate producer.
