Jammu, April 28 (NationPress) The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu has officially inaugurated the Centre for Advanced Genomics and Precision Medicine, aiming to enhance affordable, precision-oriented cancer treatment through state-of-the-art Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology.

Developed in partnership with 4baseCare, the Centre features the Illumina NextSeq 2000 sequencing machine, which provides extensive genomic profiling for individuals battling cancer.

This innovative technology allows healthcare professionals to formulate highly customized, targeted treatment strategies tailored to the individual molecular profiles of patients. AIIMS Jammu revealed its collaboration with 4baseCare earlier this year in January.

“When we treat a patient, we are also caring for their family members. This collaboration reflects our commitment to every family that enters our facility, ensuring they receive the highest quality of care,” stated Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu.

According to Dr. Sudharshan Elangovan, Vice President – Global Operations at 4baseCare, “By merging advanced genomic insights with AI-enhanced diagnostics, the Centre is set to greatly enhance early disease identification, optimize treatment options, and reduce ineffective therapies, ultimately improving patient outcomes and their quality of life.”

Historically, access to such high-level genomic testing has been financially out of reach for numerous patients. However, this new initiative aims to provide premium NGS-based tests at more accessible prices, fostering inclusivity in precision oncology throughout India.

Reinforcing its position as a national referral center, the Centre will accept samples from patients and healthcare providers nationwide, ensuring that advanced molecular diagnostics are available without geographical limitations.

The Centre will primarily concentrate on targeted, biomarker-centric therapies, creating personalized treatment plans to enhance the outcomes and quality of life for cancer patients.

Moreover, the facility intends to address rare diseases through genomic approaches. To promote healthier pregnancies, it will also incorporate cutting-edge genetic technologies, including Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT), Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS), and Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD).

Point of View

The establishment of the Centre for Advanced Genomics and Precision Medicine at AIIMS Jammu is a significant step forward in enhancing cancer care in India. By making advanced genomic technology accessible, it showcases a commitment to improving health outcomes for all citizens, regardless of their financial background. This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the importance of personalized medicine in tackling complex health challenges.
