Gujarat Health Minister honours doctor who beat dwarfism, urges students to fight failure
Gujarat Health Minister Praful Pansheriya on Tuesday, 5 May felicitated Dr Ganesh Baraiya, a doctor at Bhavnagar Civil Hospital who overcame the physical challenges of dwarfism and a rejection by the Medical Council of India (MCI) to earn his medical degree through a Supreme Court battle, at a ceremony in Gandhinagar. Pansheriya used the occasion to call on students across Gujarat not to fear failure, raising sharp concern over the rising incidence of suicides among young people.
Dr Baraiya's Journey: From MCI Rejection to Supreme Court Victory
Dr Baraiya's academic path was anything but straightforward. Described as a determined individual who refused to be defined by his physical condition, he was initially rejected by the Medical Council of India — a setback that would have ended the ambitions of many. Instead, he fought the decision all the way to the Supreme Court of India and ultimately secured his medical degree.
Dr Baraiya credited his teacher, Dr Dalpat Kataria, as a pillar of support throughout the prolonged legal battle. Pansheriya also praised the bond between the two, and acknowledged the positive role played by the medical college's dean and superintendent during the process.
