Dhaka, Feb 17 (NationPress) A total of 25 MPs from the BNP are set to take the oath as Ministers in the Cabinet, while another 24 will be sworn in as state ministers within the newly formed government in Bangladesh, according to local media reports.
The roster of Ministers features names such as Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Salahuddin Ahmed, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, and Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram, as stated by the prominent Bangladeshi daily, The Dhaka Tribune.
Furthermore, two BNP figures, Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid and Khalilur Rahman, will take their oaths as Technocrat Ministers, the report continues.
The MPs are expected to soon take their oaths as members of the Cabinet.
Earlier on the same day, during the BNP Parliamentary Party gathering, the MPs declared their decision to forgo duty-free vehicles and government land.
Local reports indicate that 45 government vehicles have been prepared for the incoming Ministers and are stationed in front of the Parliament Secretariat.
Meanwhile, all 209 winning BNP candidates were sworn in as Parliament members; however, they opted out of taking the Constitution Reform Council oath.
BNP leader Salauddin Ahmed mentioned that, following instructions from party chief Tarique Rahman, all newly elected MPs were advised against signing the Constitution Reform Council form, as they were not elected council members, reported Bangladesh's leading newspaper, The Daily Star.
Consequently, the 11-party alliance, which includes Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan, and the National Citizens' Party (NCP), declined to take parliamentary oaths, citing BNP's non-acceptance of the Constitution Reform Council.
However, shortly after, the Jamaat-led alliance, independent candidates, and Islami Andolan Bangladesh took their oaths as MPs.
Later on, six newly elected NCP MPs also participated in the oath-taking ceremony.
The oath was administered by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin in alignment with the nation's Constitution. Notably, this marks the first instance in the country's history where a CEC administered the oath to newly elected MPs.
Simultaneously, the BNP Parliamentary Party appointed Tarique Rahman as its Leader, paving the way for him to become the House Leader and undergo the Prime Minister oath later that day.
As the party with the majority, the BNP organized its Parliamentary Party meeting, which was led by Tarique Rahman. During this session, they elected him as their Leader and the sole candidate for Prime Minister, as shared on BNP's official Facebook page.
After the swearing-in ceremony, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir reiterated that Tarique, who has introduced new strategies and a vision for a 'new Bangladesh', has been chosen by the party’s MPs to lead them in the Jatiya Sangsad, as reported by Bangladesh's leading daily, The Business Standard.
The 13th parliamentary election occurred alongside the referendum on the July National Charter on February 12 across 299 of the country’s 300 constituencies.
In the elections, the BNP secured 209 parliamentary seats, whereas the radical Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami obtained 68 seats.
Tarique, who won from two constituencies, opted to vacate the Bogura-6 seat for a by-election and took his oath as a member of Parliament from the Dhaka-17 constituency.
With Tarique poised to lead Bangladesh, marking the return of a male Prime Minister after nearly 35 years, experts caution that the nation faces significant challenges in addressing the unrest and escalating Islamist extremism that characterized the 18-month tenure of the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government.
