Cambodia Initiates Initiative for 'Roads Free from Plastic Pollution'

Phnom Penh, Jan 2 (NationPress) The Ministry of Environment in Cambodia has unveiled the 'National Roads Free from Plastic Pollution' initiative aimed at keeping national roads clear of litter and plastic waste, as stated in a press release from the ministry on Thursday.
Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth mentioned that the initiative, which commenced on Wednesday, will significantly enhance the cleanliness and visual appeal of the nation's roadways.
"This initiative will elevate the aesthetic quality of cities and towns along national roads, resulting in a more beautiful, sanitary, and eco-friendly environment," he remarked.
"It aims to foster cleaner air, improved orderliness, and draw in both tourists and investors to Cambodia, creating more pleasant and livable spaces for its residents," he added.
Sophalleth appealed to all stakeholders, including public and private sectors, local authorities, and citizens, to engage in road cleaning events in their respective locales, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
He also encouraged enhanced waste management efforts and continued involvement in the "Today I Will Not Use Plastic Bags" initiative to minimize plastic usage.
The press release indicated that more than 9.7 million individuals, including students, have participated in the plastic-free initiative since its inception in September 2023.
"These initiatives are part of a larger strategy aimed at lessening plastic waste and promoting responsible waste management practices," the press release stated.
In 2024, the plastic-free initiative resulted in an 80 percent decrease in plastic imports and a notable reduction in plastic litter on the streets of 11 provinces, with an 80 percent decline in waste compared to 2023, according to the press release.
