Strengthening India-UK Defence Relations: CDS Gen Chauhan's Landmark Visit

On April 20, in London, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan received a Ceremonial Step Line welcome from his UK counterpart, Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton. This visit is significant as it represents the first official visit by an Indian CDS to the UK and marks the fifth high-level UK–India military interaction this year, following Air Chief Marshal Harv Smyth’s trip to India in March.
During their discussions, the two leaders emphasized the need to enhance collaboration in areas such as cyber security, intelligence sharing, industrial partnerships, and joint military exercises aimed at strengthening global security, stability, and resilience, as noted by the Indian High Commission in London.
"This historic visit by General Anil Chauhan to the UK showcases a robust and future-ready India-UK defence collaboration," stated the Headquarters of Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) on X. He also engaged with Mr. Vikram K Doraiswami, India’s High Commissioner to the UK.
The visit is set to further solidify defence cooperation between the two nations and advance collaboration in defence industries, intelligence, cyber security, strategic communication, and joint military drills, reinforcing their mutual commitment to global security and stability.
As per the UK defence ministry, senior civil and military officials from the UK will engage with General Chauhan during his three-day visit. Furthermore, representatives from the British defence sector will meet with him to discuss increased defence co-production initiatives. General Chauhan is also scheduled to tour the Royal College of Defence Studies, where he will meet a diverse group of international students.
Last month, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi met with Air Chief Marshal Sir Harvey Smyth in New Delhi to discuss current geopolitical conditions and bilateral defence cooperation, focusing on joint initiatives that promote peace and security.
Air Chief Marshal Smyth had also met with CDS Chauhan, where the discussions revolved around enhancing training exchanges, intelligence collaboration, and integrated military engagements between the two nations.
General Chauhan expressed appreciation for the successful completion of the 17th Military Sub Group Meeting and conveyed optimism in fostering a deeper, more integrated, and future-oriented defence relationship between India and the UK.
During this visit, Air Chief Marshal Smyth also convened with Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal A P Singh, to focus on improving operational cooperation, interoperability, and strengthening air power alliances.
