Jaishankar meets Mongolian FM Batmunkh, reviews India-Mongolia strategic ties
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday, 22 June 2026 held formal talks with Mongolian Foreign Minister Battsetseg Batmunkh in Ulaanbaatar, with both sides reviewing progress across development projects, security cooperation, and multilateral engagement under the India-Mongolia Strategic Partnership. The meeting marked a key moment in Jaishankar's two-day official visit to Mongolia — the first such high-level Indian diplomatic engagement in the country this year.
What Was Discussed
The two ministers covered a broad agenda spanning capacity building, culture, education, and security, alongside coordination at multilateral forums. Jaishankar also flagged emerging opportunities in mining, clean energy, and agri processing as sectors ripe for deeper bilateral engagement.
'Delighted to meet FM Battsetseg Batmunkh in Ulaanbaatar. Our discussions reflected the warmth, strength and promise of our Strategic Partnership. Reviewed the progress in our cooperation in development projects, capacity building, culture, education, security and multilateral fora. Also spoke about opportunities in mining, clean energy and agri processing. As a third neighbour and a spiritual partner, India stands ready to advance its close and cordial ties with Mongolia,' Jaishankar posted on X after the meeting.
India's Arrival and Welcome
Earlier on the same day, Jaishankar touched down in Ulaanbaatar and was received by State Secretary Munktushig Ilkhanajav. 'Pleased to arrive in Mongolia today. Thank State Secretary Munktushig Ilkhanajav for the warm welcome. Look forward to fruitful engagements to advance our special partnership,' he wrote on X upon arrival. During the visit, he is scheduled to call on Mongolia's top leadership.
Historical Depth of India-Mongolia Ties
Diplomatic relations between India and Mongolia were formally established in 1955. Notably, India was the first country outside the Socialist bloc to recognise Mongolia diplomatically, and subsequently supported Ulaanbaatar's entry into the United Nations (UN) and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). This historical foundation lends the partnership a depth that goes beyond transactional diplomacy.
The bilateral relationship received a significant boost last year when Mongolian President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa undertook a four-day State Visit to India in October 2025, during which he called on President Droupadi Murmu and held meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan.
Jaishankar's Next Stop: South Korea
After concluding his Mongolia engagements, Jaishankar is set to travel to the Republic of Korea on 24 and 25 June 2026. He will hold talks with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and deliver the keynote address at the Jeju Forum for Peace and Prosperity in Jeju on 25 June 2026, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The back-to-back visits underline India's active diplomatic push across the Indo-Pacific and Central Asian corridors.
