New Delhi, March 5 (NationPress) The External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar engaged in a telephonic dialogue with his Omani counterpart, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi, on Thursday, focusing on the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Post-discussion, EAM Jaishankar shared on X, "Had a conversation with FM Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi of Oman regarding the current situation in West Asia."

On March 3, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke with Oman's Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, condemning any infringement on Oman’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. PM Modi acknowledged Oman's steadfast support for the Indian diaspora.

"I spoke with His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik and shared thoughts on the latest happenings in West Asia. We condemned the breach of Oman’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. We concurred that ongoing diplomatic efforts are crucial for the swift restoration of peace and stability in the region. I sincerely appreciated Oman’s unwavering support to the Indian community," PM Modi posted on X.

On March 2, the Indian Embassy in Oman reported the death of an Indian national aboard the oil tanker MKD Vyom, which was allegedly targeted in the Gulf of Oman. The embassy is coordinating with local authorities to ensure the safe and prompt repatriation of Indian nationals present on the vessel.

"The Embassy of India extends heartfelt condolences over the tragic passing of an Indian national on the MKD Vyom. We are closely collaborating with local authorities in Oman to facilitate the safe and immediate return of our nationals aboard the tanker. We remain devoted to providing all necessary assistance in this situation," stated the Indian Embassy in Oman on X.

As per Oman's official news agency, the oil tanker, registered under the Republic of the Marshall Islands, was struck by an Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) approximately 52 nautical miles from the Omani coastline.

The tanker was transporting around 59,463 metric tonnes of cargo, and the attack resulted in a fire and explosion in the main engine room, leading to the death of one Indian crew member.

In conjunction with the Maritime Security Centre, the 21 crew members of the tanker—comprising 16 Indian nationals, four Bangladeshi nationals, and one Ukrainian national—were evacuated via the commercial vessel MV SAND, which is registered in Panama. Concurrently, a vessel from the Royal Navy of Oman is monitoring the damaged tanker and providing necessary navigational warnings to vessels operating in the same maritime zone.

The turmoil in West Asia escalated due to coordinated US-Israel strikes against Iran on February 28, aimed at diminishing Tehran's missile capabilities and military infrastructure.

The initial phase of the operation resulted in the deaths of high-ranking Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, igniting a significant retaliatory response from Iran in the form of drone and missile attacks targeting US interests, allied forces, and regional capitals throughout West Asia.
