Paris, June 12 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar met with French President Emmanuel Macron during his official visit to France on Thursday, delivering greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressing sincere appreciation for France's backing in India's battle against terrorism.

"I was honored to meet with President Emmanuel Macron of France. I conveyed the greetings of PM Narendra Modi and expressed my gratitude for France's steadfast support in combating terrorism. Our conversation emphasized the trust, comfort, and ambition inherent in our Strategic Partnership," EAM shared on X.

India and France have celebrated 25 years of strategic partnership, underpinned by profound trust and commitment.

"Our nations collaborate closely across various strategic and contemporary domains and share similar perspectives on numerous regional and global matters. During this visit, EAM will journey to Paris and Marseille, where he will engage in bilateral talks with his counterpart, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of France, Jean Noel Barrot. Additionally, he will interact with France's senior leadership and engage with think tanks and media. EAM will also take part in the inaugural edition of the Mediterranean Raisina Dialogue in Marseille," a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted prior to the EAM's trip.

In April, following the tragic Pahalgam terror attack, Macron reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, affirming France's unwavering support for India and its citizens during this sorrowful period.

Macron stated that France would stand united with its allies and persist in the fight against terrorism wherever necessary.

"I just spoke with my counterpart Narendra Modi about the cowardly terrorist attack on Tuesday, which tragically claimed the lives of many innocent civilians. France stands firmly with India and its people in this hour of grief. France, alongside its allies, will continue to combat terrorism wherever needed," the French President posted on X.

The External Affairs Minister is on an official visit to France, the European Union, and Belgium from June 8 to 14 to further enhance India's amicable relations and invigorate ongoing cooperation in various sectors.

On Wednesday, India and the European Union finalized an agreement on Trilateral Cooperation, focusing on joint priorities and supporting pilot projects in third countries.

This agreement, which propels India–EU engagement in connectivity, the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), green shipping, and clean energy, was signed in the presence of EAM Jaishankar and Jozef Sikela, the European Commissioner for International Partnership.

Both parties acknowledged that the trilateral cooperation agreement will serve the interests of the Global South.

During his stay in Brussels from June 9-11, EAM Jaishankar also met with Belgium’s King Philippe, Prime Minister Bart De Wever, and held talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot.

On the EU side, EAM met with President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola. He also co-chaired the inaugural India-EU Strategic Dialogue with EU High Representative and Vice President Kaja Kallas.
