Tehran, Nov 14 (NationPress) The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, has dismissed the claims made against Iran in a recent statement by the Group of Seven (G7), labeling them as "baseless and irresponsible."
His comments came on Thursday in a statement from the ministry, addressing a joint communique issued by the foreign ministers of the G7 nations at the conclusion of their meeting in Canada’s Niagara region, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
The G7 foreign ministers criticized Iran for allegedly offering military support to Russia in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. They urged Tehran to adhere fully to its responsibilities under UN Security Council resolutions and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and to resume complete cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), including allowing access to all nuclear facilities and materials for inspection.
Additionally, they called on Iran to initiate direct discussions with the United States, with backing from France, Britain, and Germany, collectively referred to as the E3. They also urged all UN member states to fulfill their obligations following the activation of the "snapback" mechanism, which reinstated sanctions on Tehran in September.
Baghaei criticized the G7 nations for their "irresponsible" support of what he described as the "illegal and unjustified" actions of the E3 and the United States, alleging misuse of the dispute resolution mechanism from the 2015 nuclear agreement to restore previously lifted UN Security Council sanctions on Iran.
He also pointed to what he termed "illegal aggression" by Israel and the US against Iran, which includes assaults on the nation’s "peaceful" nuclear facilities. He deemed the G7's demand for Tehran to cooperate with the IAEA, without acknowledging the joint Israeli-US actions, as hypocritical and meddlesome.
Baghaei further dismissed the anti-Iran accusations related to the Ukraine situation as "repetitive and irresponsible," reaffirming Iran's steadfast position against the war and its commitment to resolving the conflict through dialogue and negotiation.
