Washington, March 27 (NationPress) A recent incident involving Iran's suspected efforts to target a military facility in the Indian Ocean has sparked significant concern in Washington. US officials have issued warnings indicating that Tehran's missile program is extending its influence into maritime areas near India.

Lawmakers have highlighted a reported missile launch aimed at Diego Garcia, a vital US-UK military installation situated in the Indian Ocean. They asserted that this occurrence illustrates Iran's capability to project its power well beyond its immediate region.

General Stephen Whiting, who leads US Space Command, emphasized the close relationship between Iran's missile and space programs.

“Ballistic missiles function as space rockets,” he remarked.

According to US officials, Iran has made substantial progress in developing essential components for long-range strikes. Senator Tom Cotton noted that Tehran could integrate launch systems with re-entry vehicle technology to broaden its strike capabilities.

“That’s accurate,” affirmed a senior defense witness when queried about Iran's potential to achieve this expeditiously.

Admiral Richard Carroll, head of US Strategic Command, stated that Iran has showcased fundamental capabilities.

“They have proven that technology,” he remarked.

Lawmakers indicated that Iran's space launch initiatives could bolster missile advancements, pointing out that the technology used for satellite launches bears similarities to that required for long-range missiles.

This congressional hearing underscored the threats posed to US forces and allies in the Indo-Pacific. The Indian Ocean serves as a crucial artery for global commerce and energy supplies, and it has not historically been perceived as within Iran's strike range. However, that perception is evolving.

Concerns regarding cyber threats were also raised. Whiting described cyber vulnerabilities as the “soft underbelly” of space systems, cautioning that adversaries may prefer cyber assaults due to their lower cost and difficulty in attribution.

Lawmakers expressed that Iran's escalating capabilities complicate security strategies and called for enhanced missile warning systems and improved space-based tracking mechanisms.
