Tehran, March 8 (NationPress) The Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned British Ambassador to Tehran Hugo Shorter in response to the anti-Iran statements recently made by officials in his country.
In a statement issued on Friday, the ministry indicated that the British envoy was called in to express discontent regarding senior British officials' unfounded accusations about Iran and their claims that Tehran attempts to meddle in Britain's domestic matters.
During the meeting, Alireza Yousefi, assistant foreign minister and director general for Western Europe, emphasized that the biased statements and unfounded accusations against Iran contradicted principles of international law, as well as diplomatic norms, and would further erode the Iranian public's trust in Britain's policies towards Iran and the West Asia region.
He urged the British government to reconsider and amend its detrimental stance towards the Iranian populace.
The British ambassador affirmed that he would relay Iran's concerns to his government, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
In a speech to the British parliament on Tuesday, British Security Minister Dan Jarvis stated that he would classify the entire Iranian state, including its intelligence sectors, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, and the Ministry of Intelligence, under an enhanced tier of the forthcoming Foreign Influence Registration Scheme aimed at shielding Britain from covert foreign interference.
He asserted that direct actions by Iran against targets within Britain had significantly escalated in recent years, alleging that Iran's regime was targeting dissidents, media outlets, and journalists.
On Wednesday, Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei dismissed these claims as groundless and urged Britain to cease its unproductive approaches toward Iran and the West Asia region.
