New Delhi, March 2 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney engaged in discussions regarding pressing global matters, particularly the situation in Iran, as reported by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday.

During a special briefing about Carney's visit to India, P Kumaran, Secretary (East) in the MEA, highlighted that PM Modi expressed India's significant concern over the recent developments in Iran and the Gulf region. He emphasized that PM Modi called for all parties to avoid escalation and to pursue dialogue and diplomacy as a means to reduce tensions.

"Naturally, this is a critical issue at the moment, which prompted discussions. The Prime Minister took this chance to relay India's deep concern regarding the recent happenings in Iran and the broader Gulf area. He urged all parties to practice restraint, prevent further escalation, and prioritize civilian safety. He reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy are essential for de-escalating tensions and addressing the root issues," stated Kumaran.

"The sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations must be recognized. Our missions in the region are maintaining contact with Indian nationals and various community organizations, issuing advisories for them to remain alert, stay in touch with the missions, and adhere to local security protocols," he added.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi articulated concerns regarding the situation in West Asia and affirmed that India will persist in collaborating closely with all regional countries to ensure the safety and security of its citizens.

In a joint press conference with PM Carney, PM Modi stated, "India's position on the ongoing global tensions is resolute. We have always advocated for peace and stability, and when two democracies unite, the call for peace becomes even more powerful."

Addressing security issues in the Gulf nations, he remarked, "The current state of affairs in West Asia is of grave concern to us. India endorses the resolution of all disputes through dialogue and diplomatic means. To safeguard all Indian nationals, we will continue close cooperation with every country in the region."

These statements arise amidst escalating conflict in West Asia, which followed joint US-Israel strikes on Iran aimed at undermining Tehran's missile capabilities and broader military infrastructure.

The initial phase of the operation reportedly resulted in the deaths of senior Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, triggering a strong response from Tehran involving drone and missile strikes targeting US assets, regional capitals, and allied forces throughout the Gulf.
