Pakistani Oil Tankers Redirect from Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Tensions
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Islamabad, April 14 (NationPress) Two oil tankers registered under the Pakistani flag, identified as Khairpur and Shalamar, which were en route to the Strait of Hormuz, made a sharp 180-degree turn and altered their course, according to local media reports released on Tuesday.
The oil tankers, initially heading eastward towards the Strait of Hormuz, redirected their path westward, retreating from the strait on Sunday, as reported by Pakistan's prominent daily, The News International, citing Iran's Fars news agency.
The report indicates that navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is under the complete oversight of the Iranian armed forces, with vessels permitted to transit the waterway only after coordinating with Iran and securing the necessary authorizations.
This vital strait serves as a crucial conduit linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, accounting for nearly one-fifth of global oil shipments.
On Monday, US President Donald Trump cautioned Iran that any naval vessels approaching American ships enforcing a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz would be “immediately ELIMINATED,” amid rising tensions following the breakdown of diplomatic talks.
In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump asserted that Iran's naval capabilities had suffered significant degradation.
“Iran’s Navy lies at the bottom of the sea, completely obliterated - 158 ships,” he remarked, while acknowledging that Tehran still possesses a limited number of “fast attack ships.”
He further stated, “What we have not targeted are their small number of, what they refer to as, ‘fast attack ships,’ because we did not perceive them as a significant threat.”
Trump issued a stern warning to Iran against challenging the US blockade.
“Caution: If any of these ships approach our BLOCKADE, they will be swiftly ELIMINATED, utilizing the same lethal methods we employ against drug dealers at sea. It is rapid and severe,” he emphasized.
This warning coincided with the US's initiation of a blockade on Iranian ports at 10 am ET Monday (7:30 am IST), targeting maritime access in the Strait of Hormuz following the collapse of diplomatic negotiations with Tehran over the weekend.
