Senator Schumer Asserts: Americans Reject War

Key Takeaways
Washington, March 5 (NationPress) - US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed on Thursday that "Americans do not desire war", delivering a strong critique of President Donald Trump's approach to the intensifying conflict with Iran and accusing Republican senators of supporting what he termed the President's "military endeavors".
Addressing the Senate assembly, Schumer emphasized that citizens across the political spectrum are against the escalating military tensions in the Middle East.
"Americans do not want war. This sentiment is shared by Republican voters, Independents, and even many from Trump's MAGA supporters," Schumer stated.
He articulated that many feel betrayed by the ongoing situation in the Middle East and by the senators who refuse to place limits on Trump's aggressive actions.
Schumer pointed out that the Senate had a chance to curb the administration's authority earlier on Wednesday but failed to do so as the situation deteriorates further.
"Yesterday represented a disappointing and low point for the United States Senate," he remarked.
As hostilities in the region escalate, Schumer criticized Senate Republicans for aligning with Trump's military actions despite significant public disapproval.
The New York Democrat cautioned that the conflict is broadening beyond its original scope.
"The war is expanding," Schumer noted, mentioning incidents occurring as far south as the Indian Ocean and drone strikes potentially reaching as far north as Azerbaijan.
He accused the Trump administration of providing inconsistent justifications for its military objectives.
"Currently, there is no coherent strategy. The rationale from Trump and his supporters appears to change daily," Schumer added.
"If you listen to Pete Hegseth, Marco Rubio, and Donald Trump, it is clear they are improvising as they proceed."
He warned that the repercussions of the conflict are already impacting Americans domestically, particularly through surging fuel prices.
"Americans are concerned. Gas prices have risen compared to just a week ago," he indicated.
Referring to a report, Schumer mentioned that "Politico" highlighted how Susie Wiles, Trump's Chief of Staff, was raising concerns regarding gas prices.
He suggested that the White House is attempting to change the narrative concerning the economic ramifications of the conflict.
"It seems the White House is in a rush to find positive aspects to discuss regarding gas prices to alter the public's perception," Schumer stated.
Schumer attributed the increase in fuel costs to the administration's choice to initiate military action.
"Here's a thought -- if Trump desires to keep gas prices down, he should refrain from unilaterally engaging in a war with Iran," he remarked.
Moreover, he criticized the administration for its lack of proper planning.
"This underscores the administration's apparent aversion to having a strategy and considering the consequences beforehand," Schumer said.
The Senate leader concluded that Republicans now share the blame for the conflict due to their support of the President.
"Shame on Senate Republicans for not challenging Trump and his unpopular military actions," Schumer declared.
"They had the opportunity to take a stand that would have resonated widely — to oppose Trump's war. Instead, they wholeheartedly endorsed it, and now they are equally accountable for this conflict with Iran alongside Donald Trump."
