New York, March 3 (NationPress) The tragic consequences of the ongoing conflict in Iran have resulted in the death of an Indian-American student in Texas. Savitha Shan was fatally shot alongside another student by an assailant adorned with Iranian symbols while they were outside a well-frequented establishment.
Authorities confirmed Shan's identity on Monday as one of the two victims in the early Sunday morning shooting in Austin, which also left 14 individuals wounded.
The perpetrator, who has been identified as Ndiaga Diagne, a 53-year-old immigrant from Senegal, was reported to be wearing a T-shirt featuring the Iranian flag and another shirt emblazoned with the phrase “Property of Allah,” according to officials.
FBI Acting Special Agent Alex Doran indicated that there are indications of a potential “nexus to terrorism” linked to the shooter, which is currently being investigated.
In response to fears of terrorism following the commencement of US and Israeli bombings in Iran on Saturday, law enforcement agencies across the United States have heightened their security measures.
FBI Director Kash Patel communicated on X that he has directed the Counterterrorism and intelligence teams to maintain a state of high alert.
University of Texas President Jim Davis conveyed the sad news of Shan's death to the university community, stating that she was a student “on a mission to make a difference in the world.”
He characterized her as “a cherished daughter” and “a steadfast friend to many.”
“We are all deeply saddened by this devastating news, and her memory will be honored,” he expressed.
The university's radio station, KUT, reported that a friend revealed she was 21 years old and had spent her formative years in Austin.
On her LinkedIn profile, Shan mentioned that she was working towards a dual bachelor's degree in economics and management information systems at the University of Texas at Austin, expecting to graduate this year.
She also shared her involvement as a volunteer with the Austin Tamil Sangam.
Additionally, she had launched an e-commerce venture called Sunflakestickers, focused on selling stickers online.
Shan had completed internships at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Staples, the well-known office supply chain.
Describing the incident, Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis reported that early Sunday morning, Diagne parked his vehicle near a beer garden and began firing at individuals seated on its patio with a handgun.
He subsequently exited his vehicle and targeted passersby with a rifle before being neutralized by law enforcement, she detailed.
