New York, July 29 (NationPress) A solitary gunman unleashed chaos at an upscale office building on Park Avenue in New York, resulting in the tragic deaths of a Bangladeshi immigrant police officer and three additional victims before taking his own life.
The assailant, armed with an M4 rifle, entered the premises of BlackRock, the world's largest multinational investment firm, on Monday evening (local time) and shot police officer Didarul Islam along with a woman in the lobby, as reported by authorities.
Afterward, he ascended to the 33rd-floor office of a real estate firm that occupies the building, where he indiscriminately fired upon individuals, claiming two more lives before turning the gun on himself, police stated.
Among the deceased was a man and a woman.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a former police captain, fought back tears while announcing the demise of Islam, whom he identified as an immigrant from Bangladesh. He stated, "He was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers."
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted that 36-year-old Islam was a father of two sons, with his wife expecting another child. "He made the ultimate sacrifice, shot in cold blood, while wearing a uniform that symbolized his commitment to this city," she said.
The shooter, identified as Shane Tamura, 27, had a "documented mental health history," according to Tisch.
The reasons behind the attack and Tamura's choice of the real estate office remain unclear.
This incident resurrected haunting memories of another high-profile murder that occurred just eight months earlier, merely four blocks away.
The shooting site, a 44-story structure on Park Avenue in the heart of Manhattan, is home to BlackRock, which oversees $11.5 trillion in assets.
When gunfire erupted around 6:30 p.m., the building and its vicinity were locked down as law enforcement searched for the shooter and examined the area for explosives. Following the shooting, police rushed Islam from the scene and attempted CPR on the roadside before he was transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
In the aftermath, individuals from the building were evacuated, walking past police in tactical gear with their hands raised.
Tisch revealed that Tamura had traveled from Las Vegas to New York just before the rampage, driving cross-country.
Authorities discovered various medications, a revolver, ammunition, and the case for the M4 rifle in his black BMW, she stated.
